The Roaring Northerners are Dave Stewart, John Hill and Iain Robertson; a loose affiliation of tabletop wargamers and figure painters who inhabit the frozen and somewhat soggy wastelands of west central Scotland. Shadowy and secretive, they stoically quest to reduce the scale of the lead mountain that threatens to engulf them all, and perhaps even find the time for the occasional game...
....This is their story

I'll see your Pre-feudal Scots and raise some Sassunach.

15mm Essex miniatures.
Produced a while ago, but never gamed in anger!

Firstly the Spear armed infantry. Reasonably armed and armoured, the backbone of the army.
Semi professional, some raised and maintained by the bigger towns and cities, others the retinues of noble families.

Next the Fyrd. Solid Yeomen of the shires. Reliable (possibly). Trained (Maybe). Well armed.....meh.
Commanded by the heidmen of their villages.

Finally the cutting (literally) edge of the army. The Huscarls.
Well armed, rock-ard and professional, many have served abroad.
The King's hearth-guard wield spear and sword and the fearsome Dane-axe.
Flash bastards to a man!

Glad I dug these boys out and did some better pictures.
I can feel another 15mm game coming on!

David.

  1. Lovely work, Dave! I'd seen some of your spearmen before, but most of those are new to me. Will need to get round to putting some Vikings together...
