The Roaring Northerners are Dave Stewart, John Hill and Iain Robertson; a loose affiliation of tabletop wargamers and figure painters who inhabit the frozen and somewhat soggy wastelands of west central Scotland. Shadowy and secretive, they stoically quest to reduce the scale of the lead mountain that threatens to engulf them all, and perhaps even find the time for the occasional game...

Scottish/Pictish allies.

As promised.

Allies for the 15mm project.

Shamelessly self indulgent, but I like the faces and the use of one colour combination gives the shield designs a certain unity for the group I feel.

Comments pro and con most welcome.

David.

More Soviet Progress

Yesterday saw the Command pack finished and the first of the BMP dismounts ready for basing. Quite pleased with how their looking so far. Still need to add an aerial to the Radio-operator's backpack.

Since there's only 6 dismounts from a BMP, I've discovered I've got enough figures in the stash to do another squad without ordering reinforcements yet!

Some more pics over on the other blog.

Cheers

Lightbobs n stuff.

8 more elements for the 15mm project.
Archers and slingers.
A bit boring but some of the best 15mm faces I have managed to date.

Also some overall pictures of the full project so far.
52 elements.
Not much left in the original Essex box now!

Fun, and I look forward to putting them on the table as we have several long term ambitions for using them.
But probably it is time to get back to 28mm for a while.

BAOR MILAN Team

So, having spent the week so far laid up with the cold, I've managed to get the BAOR MILAN team finished and ready to base.

Again, this is the Elhiem offering, and it's a cracker, as we've come to expect from the talented hands of Matt Hingley. This was the first of the British support weapon packs released (as BAOR03), and the subsequent SF GPMG and 81mm Mortar have been just as nice.

I've been looking forward to doing the support weapons for a while, as the larger bases give me a chance to do little mini dioramas! Hooray!

The downside of being a horrible plague vector is that I've had to miss out gaming at the club tonight. Not that I'm worried aboutthe potential germ warfare side of infecting everyone else you understand; I just wouldn't want to to dribbling snotters all over anyone else's toys...

Slow Progress...

...but that's the first Soviet sqaud ready for basing! Platoon Command by Elhiem (CWR08).

First effort with the new camera-phone. The camera itself appears to be a bit better, but the shape of the phone makes it harder to hold still for macro shots. Which is interesting...

Quite chuffed with the insignia so far, but whether I'll be able to keep it up is another matter...

Bases will be done to match the Cold War BAOR.

More 15mm Spearmen.

Another four elements of foot to add to the Late Saxon/Early mediaeval project.

Up to 40 elements now.

Maybe it's time for some archers and lightbobs.

Cheers.

SITREP- the Bear stirs...

Following the previous grainy images obtained by a high-level U-2 overflight, an RAF Canberra was dispatched to carry out more detailed low-level recconaissance, following reports of Soviet Forces massing on the Lanarkshire front...

In other words, I've taken some better pictures of the Elhiem Soviets I've been working on.

These come from the Platoon Command pack, and have so far came out alright. The drab WWII style fatigues, with the full colour insignia, provide a nice contrast to the modern DPM uniforms of the british infantry they'll be facing across the table.

Currently got these plus another 6 I'm hoping to finish by the middle of next month. And once I obtain a BMP or 2 (and some FV43s), we can hopefully crack on with some further efforts at the Cold War rules...

Cheers
Iain

Orficers Francais.

This week I have mostly been painting an Officer and an Ensign carrying the ordonnance colour of the  Regiment d'Kronenbourg for our FaIW games.

28mm figures kindly supplied at Kirriemuir show by Ian at Eagle Figures.

It was great to talk to a manufacturer who was prepared to sell individual figures on request.

Ian has a particularly fine range of colonial militia that I intend to acquire for ongoing games.

Kirriemuir Wargames Show 09/11/13 TARGE

As always Kirriemuir was worth the trip.
Here are a few pics from the day.

Firstly a participation game based on the WWII Bruneval Raid, by Old Meldrum WGC. Nicely done and all participants seemed to enjoy the chance to wear red berets!

Next, Dunfermline WGC's Battle of the Metaurus. Small but beautifully formed.

A 28mm late WWI game again very nicely presented.

RAF Leuchars' participation game 'Divine Wind'. As ever presented with bags of enthusiasm getting plenty of involvement, and superbly put together.

Gourock Wargames Association presented a What if German Invasion of Southern England 1940, 15mm. Lots of lovely scenery.

Main Hall.

Dead Man's Hand. Wild West in 28mm from Angus Wargames Club.

A good day out, and for once I did not arrive home with large quantities of unpainted lead, much to Mrs Stewart's relief!

Thursday 7 November 2013

Cavalry elements.

Some cavalry to add to the Saxon/Early feudal English.

And yes I know I forgot to grass the bases!

This army will probably make the trip to Kirriemuir at the weekend, if I can get the bases finished and can figure out what to call them.

I have really enjoyed getting back to 15mm.

David.
